What Motivated Tyndale?

Question: “What motivated William Tyndale (1494-1536) to work so very hard to translate the Bible into English?” He realized that if the people had the Bible in their own language, that many of the false doctrines of medieval Roman Catholicism would be repudiated. He became convinced that, β€œIt was impossible to establish the lay people in any truth, except the Scripture were plainly laid before their eyes in their mother tongue.” In this way he affirmed the authority, inspiration, and infallibility of the Word of God. Jesus spoke in a similar way when he prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth, your word is truth.” (Jn 17:17) On behalf of all of us who speak English–thank you Lord for the indefatigable efforts of William Tyndale!
